Receive Thy Blessings II

I was reflecting on God’s goodness and marvelled at how quickly God spoke to me. As I’m fond of asking ‘Why?’, I asked again.

I came to two conclusions:

1. I asked and I received.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.  Matthew 7:7-8

2. Two friends have committed to pray for me everyday for a whole month. This is in addition to the many dear friends who have been praying for me. This is our ‘homework’ for our devotion.

Hubby and I are doing ‘Putting On The Armour’ by Chuck Lawless for our couple’s devotion. 3 weeks ago, we began the topic on ‘The Power of Prayer’. The author emphasized the urgency of prayer in spiritual warfare; he reminds us to

* Pray at all times

* Be on alert

* Pray urgently for others before the attack

The last point was interesting – I’ve never seen the role of prayer from that perspective. I would like to share what he said:

Think about your church’s prayer list. In most cases, the people on a church prayer list are already sick, hurting, or under spiritual attack. We pray for families only after they are facing troubles. Our prayers for young people increase when we hear that they have made bad decisions. We pray for churches when word comes that their members are quarreling. The Devil works, and then we start praying.

Certainly, we should pray for people under attack, but often our prayers are only catching up with what the Enemy is doing. We pray re-actively rather than proactively. Perhaps if we continually and urgently interceded for others as Paul requested the Ephesians do, the Enemy would win fewer battles.

For whom should you be praying now, before the Enemy attacks? And who is praying for you? In the words of my students,’Who’s got your back covered?’ Whose back are you personally guarding?

The application for that lesson was to think of 2 persons whom I’ll pray for everyday for 1 month and also to ask 2 persons to pray for me everyday for 1 month. I kept reminding myself everyday to pray for those 2 friends of mine. It was hard work, believe me, and sometimes I did forget 😦 I chose 2 faithful prayer warriors and these 2 wonderful ladies have agreed to pray for me.  I am quite sure their consistent prayers made my struggle much easier to bear. I figured we will live more victorious lives if we pray for one another more urgently and consistently.

With this, I will commit to pray for you everyday for one month. Would you share with me how I can pray?

I have also decided to ask my friends to pray for me everyday for a month. Will you be that friend?

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.  Ephesians 6:18

I Am a Merlion

I’ve been teaching LA how to spit out water during tooth brushing with not very much success. Somehow, she prefers to swallow than spit out 😦 I am grateful if I see trickles of water coming out of her mouth.  I often wonder: are my instructions unclear? Am I expecting too much from her? What happens if she can’t learn how to spit out water during tooth brushing? Perhaps she didn’t have enough practice…Because of this, I have been reluctant to let her use toothpaste although she had asked for it (because she wanted to be like her siblings). Her dentist at KKH suggested using very little toothpaste each time but wiping it off after that so as to minimise the amount of toothpaste she may ingest. That’s what I’ve been doing on and off.

One evening, as I decided to let her practise spitting out water during her bedtime routine, she suddenly told me,’Mama, see, I can spit out water like the Merlion.’ And she proceeded to spit out ALL the water she put into her mouth – with a good amount of strength. I thought – I must be dreaming…I made her do it again and reminded her to ‘spit out like the Merlion’ and she did!! HURRAY!!! Li-Ann can spit out water now! Another milestone reached!! I didn’t think that such associations would help her. I learnt something new. Now tooth brushing is another activity I will look forward to. Praise God for the Merlion!! With that, there may be hope for her to pass the National Education (NE) test too :-)heeheehee…

Receive Thy Blessings

May I bless you with the blessings I received?

A close girlfriend (her birthday is 1 week before mine) and I made it a point to celebrate our birthdays together every year. We had muffins this time. It was her treat. Thank you for the yummy muffins 🙂 That certainly contributed to my weight gained during CNY. Heeheehee…

I was grateful to be able to invite my parents for a homecooked meal along with desserts. The children drew me beautiful cards. We lit the candle again and again and they took turns to blow the candle (small cake lah – so can only put 1 candle; or maybe I secretly wish to be younger??!!). We were all SUPER full by 9pm and had a lot of fun. I was reminded by one pastor that when it’s my birthday, I should think of my parents. Without them, I wouldn’t be here. It’s my continued prayer that they come to know Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour.

On the actual day…

* My mom-in-law called me early in the morning to bless me. It’s such a wonderful privilege to be blessed by one who loves me and consistently prays for me. Thank you mom:-)

* I suddenly realise the beauty of the Facebook – everyone knows your birthday!! Thank you friends and family for your birthday wishes. Thank you for taking time to send me your well-wishes – although it was only a few keystrokes but I see your hearts.

* A good friend from university days actually put my birthday in his phone and sent me an email early in the morning all the way from Shanghai. Thank you so much. I am touched 🙂 God knows I can do with more love this birthday…

* CM gave me a day off. He was so kind to apply leave to be with the children (actually the children LLLOOOVVVE to be with daddy!!!) so I could do what I wish. Thank you dear!

* I was given a whole cheesecake, an organic fruit smoothie and an organic salad. WOW!!! Such sweet and healthy blessings. And not cheap ok…

* I had uninterrupted time to relax under a big and beautiful tree in Botanic Gardens to hear what God has to tell me. While He sheltered me, He gave me rest. He allowed rays of sunlight through and gave me cooling breezes amidst the scorching heat. I sensed this is also what I have to do for my children. And God showed me how (He sure worked FAST!!).

* I was seeking the Lord on His will regarding homeschooling. I felt the agony in my spirit and didn’t know what to do, how to pray or who to turn to. I just wanted to find a private place to hide and cry my heart out to God. You know what? Even before I could find a place and chance to cry, I could feel God’s mighty but gentle hands catching hold of my tears and preventing them from falling. This verse in Psalm 56:8 (Amplified Bible) came to mind

You number and record my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle–are they not in Your book?

I couldn’t believe it – even my tears are so precious to the Lord! After that, it’s really quite hard to cry, believe me.

God continued to affirm me as I read ‘My Utmost For His Highest’ by Oswald Chambers on 5 March:

– When God has called me to the ministry to home school, He will give me opportunities to fulfil His will. I only need to be loyal to this ministry.

– What God requires is not that I’ll be successful, but that I’m faithful to this call.

– That also implies I have to forsake demands for service along other lines.

That didn’t fully address my query and God knew it all. I needed to know if I’m on the right track in building the children’s character. I wanted to know how I should teach my children to walk the narrow way – how to live in the world but not of the world. Beth Moore, in her devotion ‘Daniel’, shared pointedly about how she hopes to live knowing we are in the endtimes

“..holy and godly lives will not be accidental for any of us. The virus of self-gratification is far too contagious. If we don’t want to catch it, we must deliberately immunized ourselves against it…As I consider our ‘times’, I don’t only want to be fortified against the influences of wickedness.  I want to be an active influence for Christ…I don’t want to guard against a cold heart, I want a heart that burns with fiery passion for Christ and for the world Hw came to save. I want to be part of worldwide missions. I want an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on my very own head! I want to take my place int he times to which I’ve been entrusted.”

I want that too!!

I praise God for another acknowledgement of my goals for homeschooling. Thereafter, God gave me the model answer on ‘How to Pray Powerful Prayers’ – Daniel 9:1-19. Let me share an excerpt of one of  the most powerful prayers in the Old Testament: verses 16-19 (KJV)

16O LORD, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.

17Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.

18O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies.

19O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.

As I go to God urgently in prayer, my anguish was relieved and my mourning was turned into dancing because of the assurances and hope in my Abba Father. It sure was hard to keep my feet from tapping after that 🙂

* I had wanted to visit a couple of friends to fellowship but God closed the doors, telling me that He only wanted me to receive on my birthday – an outpouring of His blessings. Who can out give a God like that?

Finally, I learnt that these blessings can be received on a daily basis. On one condition – that we declare our poverty spiritually. Jesus taught in Matthew 5:3-4

3Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Our Lord is ever ready to open His floodgates of blessings.

Are you willing and ready to receive?

The Hula Hoop

I personally never have any affinity for this round thing called the hula hoop, although I think it’s an excellent way to exercise. Hence, I don’t think very much of it.

Sometime last year, we had a stall at a fun fair and my friend happened to set up a games stall next to ours. One of the games was to see how many times one could do the hula hoop. While I tend to my stall, I urged the children to go and have fun. To our amazement, Rebecca could do the hula hoop and she did VERY well too. You should see the way she did it – it was so effortless! That was SSSSSOOOOO exciting!!! Rebecca was thrilled!!! When we got home, we quickly asked her to try our hula hoops but she couldn’t do it at all. Upon checking with my friend, I discovered a secret (maybe it’s not a secret to others, only to me) – hula hoops do have weights in them, like water or beans. So we brought Rebecca to a bookshop nearby and asked her to try the hula hoops there. When she could do it, we bought one for her. This one contains water.

We were so happy that she found something she can do well, even better than John. We hope to encourage her to keep working at it. It’s so easy for a younger sibling to live in the shadows of the older one and we didn’t want that. We continue to pray for God to show us the gifts of our children and also how to nurture them.

Just this week, John counted and claimed Rebecca did 1000 times!? And he was suggesting that it may be good enough (I’m not sure) for the Guiness Book of Records. Now how’s that for a supportive brother 🙂 Thank you John for loving your sister and sharing in her joy.

Chatty Baby

It’s amazing how much Li-Ann talk nowadays. I find that I’m like a traffic controller at times – reminding them to talk less and eat more/quickly, reminding them to take turns to speak, reminding to speak softly (especially in the car) , reminding to speak kindly and appropriately etc. Regardless, it’s so good to find LA speaking so naturally and what’s best is – she also enjoy conversations with others outside the family, with people who ‘click’ with her. However, I also saw how she has used her verbal abilities to ‘xiam’ (dialect for avoid) what she doesn’t like.

On her recent visit to the therapists, I dropped her off and picked her up an hour later. When I checked with them on how LA fared. Both gave the thumbs up for her EXCELLENT communication with them but the thumbs down for her unwillingness to adhere to the tasks she was told to do. Basically, she told them to do this and that or not to do this or that just to get her way. I saw the simple joining of the dots which she was told to do but only completed partially. I knew she could do them but she just didn’t want to.  She did the same thing to her swimming coach. All in the same week.

It’s wonderful that she can wiggle her way out. At least we know she IS thinking. I thank God for her cognitive development. Now I’m trusting God to nip bad behaviours quickly and to teach what is right. So…I will need LOADS of perseverance.
